PAKISTAN PARTICIPATion IN the International SHELL ECO-MARATHON IN GERMANY

 Panthera

As the need for coming up with renewable and aristocratic energy solutions increases, a group of Pakistani undergraduates come up with a solution that not only tests their technical skills but also their managerial mettle.

For more than 24 years running, the Shell Eco-marathon has challenged the engineers of the future to design, build and drive a vehicle using the least amount of energy. In 2008, there were more than 330 teams from across the globe competing to develop the world’s most fuel-efficient car. This is the first time that Pakistan has been selected to compete in the competition that is to be held in May, 2009 in Germany. Pakistan participated in the “Urban Concept” part of the competition which means that the car is a scaled down version of the normal cars but it is road legal. The car has following distinctive features:

  • Ü       Low friction streamlined body

  • Ü       Extremely low weight i.e. about 150 kg

  • Ü       Simple and easy to troubleshoot mechanism

  • Ü       Low pollution emission

  • Ü       Spacious luggage compartment

  • Ü       Four separately controlled disc brakes for extra safety points

  • Ü       Notably low fuel consumption, proposed to about 70 km/ liter

The above project is carried out by a team of eight young under-graduate engineering students of GIK-I Mr. Khurram Aziz is the team leader. He is working along with these following members:

  • Ü       Shahbaz Alavi

  • Ü       Syed Salik Hussain

  • Ü       Salman Javed

  • Ü       Muneeb Tariq

  • Ü       Fawad Ahmad

  • Ü       Mohammad Haseeb Ali

  • Ü       Khwaja Umer Riaz

Since this project is directed to save the future and may help reduce the energy problem, STEM Careers Programme, a joint venture of Higher Education Commission and Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) Islamabad under the directives of its executive committee, sponsored the project.  To present the sponsorship amount and to encourage the first ever team for its participation in the competition which was scheduled to held from 4th to 10th May at Lausitz, Germany, a ceremony was arranged at HEC on 29th April, 2009. Dr S. Sohail H. Naqvi, Executive Director HEC was consented to be the Chief Guest at the occasion, Dr Muhammad Aslam, Rector PIEAS, Dr Shaukat Hameed Khan, Rector GIK-I & Member Planning Commission, Prof. Dr. Fazal Ahmed Khalid (SI), Pro- Rector GIK-I, Dr Tehsin Hamid, Pro Rector PIEAS, Dr. Javed Ahmed Chatha Dean FME GIKI, Al Hasanat Rasul, were also present at the occasion.
