STEM Careers Programme Organized 4th
Design Build and Fly Competition (DBFC-IV) in collaboration with
Faculty of Macenatical Engineering (FME) of Ghulam Ishaq Khan
Institute (GIK-I) on 4-5th April-2009 at GIK-I.
DBFC is part of the National Engineering
Competitions of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics) Careers Programme, which is joint venture of Higher
Education Commission and Pakistan Institute of Engineering & Applied
Sciences (PIEAS), Islamabad to groom the youth of the nation in the
STEM Careers. This provides an excellent opportunity to the students
and faculty from multiples disciplines to involve in the creative
activities involved in Design, Build and Fly in collaboration with
professionals involved in flying.
  
The aim of such competition is to
encourage the youth and to hunt the talent to ultimately take them
to international level competitions in the years to come. 45 Teams
registered however 19 teams competed in the final event.
 
The competition was divided into two
categories: Electric Powered Radio Controlled Aircraft and Engine
Powered Radio Controlled Aircraft. Following are the positions of
the teams:

First Prize: Rs 40000
Second Prize: Rs 30000
Third Prize: Rs 25000
Special Prize: Rs 5000

Air Commodore Taher Mahmood was the
chief guest in the concluding ceremony and the officials of Pakistan
Aeronautical Complex (PAC) Kamra were invited to judge the
capabilities of young engineers and their efforts to Design, Build
and Fly Remote Controlled Aircrafts. They lauded the level of
professionalism and said that all the designs were really attractive
and admirable. Dr Fazle Khalid, Pro Rector GIK-I, Dr Muhammad Abid,
Coordinator DBFC, Al Hasanat Rasul, Programme Director STEM, and the

(Team Leader), Sqn Ldr Sallman Hussain, AMF, Sqn Ldr Muhammad Sohail,
AMF, Flt Lt Aqib Yaqub Awan, AMF, Flt Off Shahid Hussain, F-6 RF
were also present in the concluding ceremony.
On the whole the competition was a
success due to the increase of teams in the event and the
improvement and sophistication in the designs of the competing
